Connecting to
Sacramento Area Libraries

The method you use to connect to your library's online catalog (OPAC) will depend on how the library has set up the system.

  • Some online catalogs are connected to the Internet. You can either reach them by telnet from your own Internet connection, or via World Wide Web connection. Check out Libweb - Library WWW Servers for a comprehensive list of libraries on the Web around the world.
  • Some online catalogs are NOT connected to the Internet. You can reach them by direct dial from any properly set up computer.
Okay, let's make it MORE confusing:

  • Some online catalogs can be reached either way!
This is cool. It means that you have a choice.

    • If you do have access to the Internet, you will want to use telnet. The only charge will be whatever your Internet provider charges for your online time.

    • If you don't have access to the Internet from your home or office (but you DO have a computer, modem, phone line and communications software), you will choose the direct dial. You will have to pay any long distance charges.

    • Many libraries also have web pages in addition to telnet or direct dial access. The web page usually explains how you can connect to their online catalog.

Comforting note: Libraries are working to make this easier! Give us a year or two to work it out!
